How to Get to the Toronto Islands (and Which Ferry to Take)
Everything you need to know about getting to the Toronto Islands: ferry schedules, tickets, which dock to use, and how to get there by TTC.
The Toronto Islands are the city’s best escape — beaches, skyline views, and bike trails, 15 minutes from downtown. Here’s exactly how to get there.
Take the city ferry (the main way)
The City of Toronto runs ferries from the Jack Layton Ferry Terminal at 9 Queens Quay West, at the foot of Bay Street.
- Which ferry: There are three docks — Centre Island, Hanlan’s Point, and Ward’s Island. For first-timers, take Centre Island (most amenities, closest to the village and beaches).
- Tickets: Buy online in advance in summer — same-day tickets sell out on weekends. A round trip is cheap (under $10 for adults, less for kids and seniors).
- Getting to the terminal: Take the TTC to Union Station, then walk south on Bay Street for about 10 minutes. Or hop on the 509/510 streetcar to Queens Quay.
The fastest option: water taxi
Private water taxis run from the harbourfront and get you across in about 5 minutes. They cost more but run when the ferries don’t — handy late at night.
What to do when you arrive
Rent a bike near Centre Island, walk the boardwalk to Hanlan’s Point beach, or grab food in the Ward’s Island village. Give yourself at least half a day.
Good to know
- Ferries run year-round but on a reduced winter schedule — check times before you go.
- The islands are mostly car-free. That’s the point. Walk or bike.
- Bring layers: it’s always windier on the water than downtown.
